How to become a Shotfirer or Blaster
Official title: Shotfirers and Blasters
Shotfirers and blasters determine blasting positions and the force required, and load and detonate explosives to break up or loosen coal, ore, rock and other minerals in mines and quarries, and demolish buildings and similar structures.
Main tasks
- Ensure compliance with procedures and regulations for handling, storing and transporting explosives
- Plan and specify the depth and diameter of blast holes, and check depth and clean holes before loading
- Decide the quantity and type of explosives to use
- Load explosives into blast holes
- Connect leads and fuses into firing circuits, test circuits, fix faults and connect blasting machines
- Ensure all explosives have detonated and report any misfires
- Announce the extent of the exclusion zone before detonation
