Sign writers, decorative painters, engravers and etchers decorate articles of wood, metal, textiles, glass, ceramics and other materials, lay out and paint letters, figures, monograms and designs to make signs, and engrave and etch decorative floral designs on glass and other articles.
Main tasks
- Paint decorative designs by hand on articles such as pottery, glass and lampshades
- Plan and paint letters, figures, monograms and designs to make signs
- Draw designs or cut lettering for painting on signs, glassware, pottery or galvanised plates
- Engrave and print patterns, decorative designs, etchings, trademarks, figures or lettering on flat or curved surfaces of metal, glass, plastic or ceramic articles
- Etch decorative designs, graduation marks and other patterns on glass
- Apply glaze to ware by spraying or dipping
- Coat mirror glass with silver nitrate
