How to become a Civil Engineer
Official title: Civil Engineers
Researches and directs civil engineering work, plans and designs bridges, dams, wharves, harbours, coastal and marine works, roads, airports, railways, waste treatment systems, flood control systems and industrial and other large structures, and plans, manages and supervises their construction, maintenance and repair.
Main tasks
- Research and design the structure of civil engineering works such as bridges, dams, wharves, roads, airports, railways, waterways, channels, waste treatment and flood control systems and other large buildings
- Decide construction methods, materials and quality standards, and direct construction work
- Set up control systems to make sure structures perform effectively and safely
- Direct the maintenance of civil engineering structures, and analyse how soil and rock behave under heavy loads on foundations
- Analyse structural stability and test the performance and durability of building materials

- University department: Engineering degrees, Offered by 93 universities in Taiwan
- Licence (national exam): Regulated profession. To practise as a professional civil or hydraulic engineer you must pass the national Professional and Technical Examination (專門職業及技術人員考試) for 土木工程技師、水利工程技師 and hold the certificate. Listed in the annex to article 2 of the Enforcement Rules of the Professional and Technical Examinations Act, item 4.
- Licence (national exam): Regulated profession. To practise as a professional geotechnical or soil and water conservation engineer you must pass the national Professional and Technical Examination (專門職業及技術人員考試) for 大地工程技師、水土保持技師 and hold the certificate. Listed in the annex to article 2 of the Enforcement Rules of the Professional and Technical Examinations Act, item 18.
- Licence (national exam): Regulated profession. To practise as a professional structural engineer you must pass the national Professional and Technical Examination (專門職業及技術人員考試) for 結構工程技師 and hold the certificate. Listed in the annex to article 2 of the Enforcement Rules of the Professional and Technical Examinations Act, item 16.
