Official title: Power Production Plant Operators
Operates, monitors and maintains equipment in power system control centres, controlling the generation and distribution of electricity or other energy through the transmission system, and operates power station reactors, turbines, generators and auxiliary equipment.
Main tasks
- Operate, monitor and inspect different types of power generation equipment; operate and control generating systems and equipment such as boilers, turbines, generators, capacitors and reactors in hydro, thermal, coal, oil, gas and nuclear power plants to produce and distribute electricity
- Clean and maintain equipment such as generators, boilers, turbines, pumps and compressors to prevent breakdowns
- Control the switching of generating equipment, set water levels and communicate with system operators to manage and coordinate transmission load, frequency and voltage
- Read charts, meters and gauges at set intervals and troubleshoot problems
- Complete and keep power station logs and machine operation and maintenance records and reports, test operations regularly, and talk with other electrical staff to assess equipment condition
