How to become a Dispensing Optician
Official title: Dispensing Opticians
Makes up glasses to the prescriptions of eye doctors.
Main tasks
- Advise customers on choosing and caring for glasses, contact lenses and similar optical devices
- Interpret vision prescriptions and order glasses from optical manufacturers, including grinding lenses and fitting them into frames, and explain how to use contact lenses
- Check that glasses and low-vision aids match the prescription, and adjust lenses and frames for customers

- Technical college: Technical and vocational college programme. Universities of science and technology and junior colleges run departments in related fields: therapy and rehabilitation (0915); health, other (0919). Departments in academic year 114 (2025-26): four-year technical bachelor's (四技) 2, two-year technical bachelor's (二技) 1, five-year junior college (五專) 3, two-year junior college (二專) 1. Fields matched to the occupation by Peernovo.
- Licence (national exam): Regulated profession. To practise as a optometrist or optometric technician you must pass the national Professional and Technical Examination (專門職業及技術人員考試) for 驗光師、驗光生 and hold the certificate. Listed in the annex to article 2 of the Enforcement Rules of the Professional and Technical Examinations Act, item 40.
